- Damp: the surface feels cool and a little moist. Do not water yet.
- Wet: the surface is soggy, or you see water. Do not water. Check the drainage.

Use peat moss with perlite or sand. Do not use potting soil or fertilizer.
Tips for Venus flytrap
- Use rain water or distilled water. Tap water has minerals that harm the roots.
- Do not touch the traps. Each trap can close only a few times before it dies.
- In winter, the plant rests for 3 to 4 months. Keep it cool, 2 to 10 C, and a little drier.
- Cut off black traps. This is normal for old traps.
